NaNoWriMo 2013 - Almost time!

As the leaves change color and the crisp Autumn air creeps in, we find ourselves on the brink of yet another NaNoWriMo adventure. Last year I managed to reach the goal of 50,000 words in a month; it was a challenge with school and family, but I did it. This semester I am not taking any English classes, so I'm hoping the lack of having to write papers will benefit my daily word count.

Of course the decision to participate in NaNoWriMo is always an easy one to make, the real dilemma is deciding what to write about. It is not a lack of ideas, but rather too many ideas that span a great variety of subjects. Last year I broke away from my usual genre of Historical Fiction to write a Dystopian/Post Apocalyptic novel, but I am returning to my usual genre this year. After much deliberation I have finally decided upon my subject! My new WIP will be about the life of Mary Shelley.

History Today: "Hell's Gate" Found in Turkey

"A “gate to hell” has emerged from ruins in southwestern Turkey, Italian archaeologists have announced. 

Known as Pluto's Gate -- Ploutonion in Greek, Plutonium in Latin -- the cave was celebrated as the portal to the underworld in Greco-Roman mythology and tradition."

Richard III Among Us Once More

For those of you who know my fascination with Richard III, I'm sure you can imagine how excited I was yesterday to read that the bones found during The Greyfriars Dig were indeed those of Richard III. As if that wasn't exciting enough, now the Richard III society has unveiled the reconstructed face of this medieval king!

I have to admit, I never pictured Richard III as having such a youthful countenance; I've always imagined a more weary face mixed with a premature tiredness, but that doesn't make me any less excited about this reconstruction. Although the stories and mysteries surrounding this monarch will most likely forever be in question, at least we now have a tangible element on which to attach our theories.

I read Stephen King's On Writing A Memoir of the Craft the other day, and I just thought I would share some of the intriguing passages that will remain with me as I continue my WIP.
